Overview

Leach’s repertoire includes concerti, acoustic and electroacoustic works for solo percussion, pieces for percussion duo, and an extensive list of chamber music. He is featured as a soloist with orchestras, wind ensembles, percussion ensembles, and mixed chamber groups, performing a variety of repertoire that accommodates a range of ensembles. Of special interest is Leach’s latest commission, a Percussion Concerto from British composer Dave Maric, set to be premiered in March 2019. The piece is written for wind ensemble, solo percussion, and electronics, with scores available in December 2018 and an orchestral arrangement forthcoming.

In addition to his work as a concerto soloist, Leach currently offers two structured, full-length solo programs: Synthesis, his solo recital, and ELISION, an entirely electroacoustic show with two continuous halves. Bookings can be made for specific concertos or one of these solo programs. Adjusted programs or additional repertoire requests are always welcome with advance notice. Tech riders and logistics information are available upon request.

Synthesis…

is Leach’s solo recital program, made up of newly composed pieces representing the very best of the modern percussion repertoire. The program’s title comes from the combination of different key elements within the show—some contrasting, and some complimentary—which define the performance. Percussion meets theatre, acoustic and electronic sounds come together, and serious art battles comedic shtick in a diverse, exploratory program that keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end.

The recital begins with Asventuras, a fun, groovy opener that uncovers the many colors of a single snare drum. Burritt Variations, a tour de force for marimba, increases the energy with its driving rhythms and signature Latin American flair. This leads to Leach’s latest commission, I Leave You the Real World for solo vibraphone and electronics, a four-movement masterwork that blends retro sounds with a variety of textures to bring the first half to an exciting close. The second half opens with a newly commissioned, dramatic piece for solo percussion and theatre (by Linda Kernohan, TBA), whose sparse instrumentation fittingly leads to the most massive setup of the program—either the EDM-inspired Trilogy, or the expressive and reminiscent Decay No. 2. The final piece, Ceci n’est pas use balle, has Leach dancing around the stage with an invisible bouncy ball, ending the show with a wonderful entertaining crowdpleaser.

ELISION…

takes the audience on an exhilarating journey through the sonic landscape of electroacoustic percussion music. The performance focuses on the relationship between live and recorded sounds, which interact in different ways to expand the timbral spectrum of acoustic instruments. The electronics take on many roles throughout the program, by working cooperatively with, in opposition to, or completely independent of the performer. This fluctuating duality is precisely what defines the production, presenting twists and turns through moments of musical athleticism, comedy, and repose. ELISION is made up of two halves which run continuously from beginning to end, featuring fully integrated electronics, effective stage transitions, and accessible entry points for a variety of audiences.
